Understanding Mesh Complications

Here is our current understanding of a few of the risks associated with mesh when used in a breast procedure.

  • The use of mesh is not without risk. As reported in an article published to the National Library of Medicine in 2016, “Mesh use in BR is associated with many complications. Of these, infection, seroma, haematoma, capsular contracture, skin flap necrosis, and explantation or implant loss were the most commonly reported.”
  • The same article later states “Infection is one of the most common complications seen in both biological and synthetic mesh use, which often leads to tissue necrosis, and may result in explantation, revision, or even complete loss of implant.”
  • According to a 2024 reviewed study shared to the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, when mesh was used in breast surgeries, re-operation rates reached nearly 10%.

Why is the Breast Mesh Product Causing Problems?

Synthetic and biological mesh is a material often used during breast surgeries such as breast lifts, reconstruction, augmentation, or reduction. The substance is used to “bridge the gap” that often appears when an implant is inserted, internal tissues are adjusted, a portion of muscle is removed, or a small pocket of space is created between muscles and tissue during various breast surgeries. The idea behind using the mesh is that it was made to reinforce the area in which it was placed.

Some of the breast mesh brands included in this investigation are listed as follows:

  • GalaFLEX
  • FlexHD
  • AlloMax
  • Phasix
  • DuraSorb
  • SurgiMend
  • AlloDerm
  • Strattice

FDA Concerns Over Breast Surgical Mesh

“The safety communication summarizes an analysis of data from a study evaluating outcomes in patients undergoing implant-based breast reconstruction after mastectomy. The analysis showed significantly higher complication rates of explantation (implant removal), reoperation and infection in patients with FlexHD and AlloMax brands of ADM two years following surgery, when compared with patients who received SurgiMend or AlloDerm brands, or no ADM.”

“The FDA is aware of increased use of surgical mesh products in breast surgery. However, the safety and effectiveness of surgical mesh in breast surgery, including in augmentation or reconstruction, has not been determined by the FDA.”

“BD has updated their labeling for these products, including updated warnings and precautions. The FDA is issuing this letter to ensure that health care providers are aware of these labeling updates, and are aware that surgical mesh products, including BD’s mesh products, have not been determined by the FDA to be safe and effective for use in breast surgery.”
