What is the Problem?
About 64,000 WorkPro Momentum Office Chairs were recalled on January 16, 2025. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates that 20% (33 million) of the U.S. workforce works in an office. Including those who work remotely, the estimate jumps to over 50 million workers. Many people are seriously injured after falling out of chairs every year.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the WorkPro Momentum’s bolts that connect the back of the chair to its base can fail, posing a fall hazard. There could be several defects with a chair that may cause an injury accident:
A chair may have weak joints or loose screws that may fail under a person’s weight;
A chair may have cracked or split materials that can compromise its structural integrity;
A chair may have improper tilt mechanisms that could cause the user to recline or tip back suddenly; and/or
A chair may have improper casters or wheels.
The recalled ergonomic chairs were sold in black (model number 8517865) or gray (model number 2864384). The chairs have a metal frame, cushioned seat, five casters, and a high back that shifts side-to-side. The model number is located underneath the seat cushion.
The WorkPro Momentum Office Chairs were sold at Office Depot and OfficeMax stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com, officedepot.com, Walmart.com, ebay.com, and other websites from October 2021 through September 2024 for about $430.
