Ultrasound Gel Recall Lawsuit

A number of ultrasound gels and lotions have been recalled after the FDA and CDC found them to be contaminated with Burkholderia cepacia complex, also known as BCC or B. Cepacia.

Recently, there have been multiple recall notices issued by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in connection with various ultrasound gels and lotions manufactured by Eco-Med.

Since that time, the manufacturer has shut down all operations and is no longer manufacturing or distributing any products.

If you or a loved one has been the victim of a bacterial infection after having a procedure done that required the use of a recalled ultrasound gel or lotion, you may be entitled to compensation for your illness and injuries. Talk with the lawyers at Johnson//Becker to see if you have a case.

Why have Eco-Med ultrasound gels and lotions been recalled?

The FDA received information that Eco-Med products tested positive for bacterial contamination. While investigating this issue, the FDA independently confirmed that a number of Eco-Med ultrasound gels and lotion products tested positive for bacterial contamination.

BCC Bacterial Contamination – Burkholderia cepacia complex (B. cepacia)

Burkholderia cepacia complex (B. cepacia) is made up of different species of bacteria that are found in the natural environment. Some of these types of bacteria pose serious risks to the health of a person infected by the bacteria.

The effects of Bcc range from no symptoms to serious infections, including bloodstream infections that may result in sepsis or death.

To date, the use of Eco-Med ultrasound gels has been associated with at least 66 infections, including 60 bloodstream infections. Additional possible infections may have been associated with the use of Eco-Med ultrasound gels.

Potential routes of transmission leading to bloodstream infections associated with a contaminated non-sterile ultrasound gel may include:

  • Use of the gel for visualization prior to, in preparation for, or during an invasive procedure, where instruments are introduced into the patient’s body, or
  • Application of the gel inside the sterile ultrasound probe sleeve during an invasive procedure using ultrasound guidance

List of Recalled Eco-Med Products

Most patients who develop an infection after a contaminated ultrasound gel or lotion was used will not know the name of the product. However, a healthcare provider who was exposed to the contaminated product might know the exact name of the product.

Regardless of which type of individual you are, we are providing a list of recalled Eco-Med products below.
