Polaris recalled its MATRYX RMK KHAOS and PRO snowmobiles due to the risk of fire and burn injuries. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) posted the recall notice on May 4, 2023. The vehicles were also recalled on Aug. 31, 2023 due to another injury hazard.

According to the CPSC, while the rider engages the throttle and brake simultaneously, the brake system could overheat in the rotor area, posing a fire hazard and burn injuries to the rider. The CPSC also stated that the handlebar hooks on the snowmobiles poses a risk of puncture wounds upon impact in a crash.

On Nov. 30, 2023, the recall was expanded due to two more injury hazards. According to the CPSC, the clutch can fail and cause the clutch or clutch components to loosen, posing an injury hazard to users. Additionally, the ring gear on the primary clutch can fail, posing an injury hazard to consumers.

Polaris and the CPSC received 164 reports of the brake system overheating. 22 of the incidents reported a fire. The companies also received four reports of puncture wounds during a crash, 91 reports of clutch failure, and nine reports of the ring gear failing. An additional injury was reported where the ligament was separated from the rider’s foot.

Approximately 15,900 units were recalled, with an additional 7,040 in Canada.
