Understanding the Nara Organics Formula Botulism Recall

  • The FDA released a recall informing the public that federal and state health officials are currently investigating a nationwide infant botulism outbreak linked to Nara Organics baby formula. Infant botulism occurs when an infant consumes Clostridium Botulinum spores that proceed to colonize in the intestines and produce the botulinum toxin. The toxin can cause serious illness, or death.
  • According to the Cleveland Clinic, infant botulism is relatively rare occurring. However, “unlike botulism in older children and adults, infant botulism can come on slowly and get gradually worse over time. That means parents and other caregivers can make a big difference in noticing the symptoms early and getting medical care.” Delaying care may lead to tragic consequences.
  • Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro released a statement on June 16, 2026 highlighting the unprecedented rise of botulism cases appearing in infants who have used formula due to corporate and manufacturer error, “In just seven months, we have experienced two outbreaks of infant botulism tied to powdered infant formula. First, a ByHeart outbreak which sickened 48 sick babies across 19 states, and now Nara Organics with babies in three different states – all of them between two and five months old – now fighting for their lives. Something we previously had not thought was likely, or even possible, now has .. caused two outbreaks with two separate companies within the same year.”
  • The University of Kentucky, through UKNOW and UK HealthCare cited that common occurrences of the appearance of the botulism causing spores in formula may have environmental origins, stemming from dust and dirt that may be present in manufacturing facilities and cross-contaminating the formula as it is prepped and packaged for distribution.

Timeline of the Nara Organics Formula Recall

  • The CDPH IBTPP reported three toxin type A infections among infants consuming Nara Organics Whole Milk Organic Powdered Infant Formula with illness onset between April and May 2026. Officials in two states have collected leftover infant formula for testing. This testing is underway, and results are expected in the coming weeks.
  • On June 12, 2026, FDA contacted the firm to notify them about this outbreak and recommended that the firm conduct a recall due to the severity of illness and the epidemiological signal.
  • On June 13, 2026, Nara Organics agreed to a voluntary recall of their Nara Organics brand Whole Milk Organic Powdered Infant Formula.
