What is the Problem?
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the recalled roller shades have long cords that can cause death or serious injury to children due to strangulation and entanglement hazards. The CPSC’s recall stated, “The window coverings violate the federal regulations for window coverings and present a substantial hazard. The shades also violate labeling requirements for window coverings.”
Are My Window Coverings Included in this Recall?
The April 17, 2025, recall includes about 73,000 Joydeco Roller Window Shades. The shades were sold in beige, light gray, and white. The sizes range from a width of 20-70 inches to a height of 75 inches. “Joydeco” is printed on the headrail label sticker that covers the shades’ operating mechanism.
The window coverings were sold exclusively online at Amazon.com from September 2021 through September 2024 for between $26 and $80.
Why are there Federal Regulations Concerning Window Coverings?
The CPSC’s goal is to eliminate the ongoing tragedy of child deaths from corded custom window coverings. The Commission is aware of 209 fatal and near-miss strangulations on window covering cords that occurred among children 8 years old and younger from January 2009 through December 2021.
What are the Federal Regulations for Window Coverings?
Window covering safety standards (effective May 30, 2023):
- Cordless designs: No operating cords allowed.
- Inaccessible cords: All cords must be out of reach of children.
- Short cords: Cords must be 8 inches or shorter in any position.
Additionally, window coverings must have a permanent label inside the headrail or on the roller tube. The label must include the manufacturer’s name and location, date of manufacture, product type (Custom or Stock), and order details for custom products.
