On Oct. 25, 2022, The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a warning to consumers to immediately cease using select Pine-Sol products.

According to the assessment of CPSC, the Pine-Sol cleaner may contain bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Consumers with weakened immune systems or external medical devices who are exposed to Pseudomonas aeruginosa are at a higher risk of falling ill and acquiring a serious infection that may require medical treatment. The bacteria can enter the body if inhaled, through the eyes, or through a break in the skin.

What Pine-Sol Products were included in the recall?

The Clorox Company, of Oakland, California announced a product safety recall.

This recall involved:

Pine-Sol Scented Multi-Surface Cleaners in-

  • Sparkling Wave

The products were sold in bottles of 28, 48, 60, 100, 144, and 175 fluid ounces. Clorox recalled all of the above-described products manufactured at its Forest Park, Georgia facility through September 2022.

The Pine-Sol products were sold online through Amazon.com and additional retailer websites and in stores at Walmart, Sam’s Club, Dollar General, Target, Home Depot, BJ’s, Kroger, Dollar Tree, Lowe’s, Publix, and other major retailers nationwide, for between $2.50 and $12.50.

Clorox® To Pay $14.15 Million in Civil Penalty Settlement

According to a statement released by the CPSC, Clorox did not immediately share their report of findings that select Pine-Sol products contained a defect that could create a potential safety hazard or that using the product could produce an unreasonable risk of serious injury or death to consumers.

According to the CPSC, in early 2019, microbiologists at Clorox issued a report with findings of bacterial contamination in storage tanks described as a “possibly a Pseudomonad,” or bacteria. When these products were released to market, Clorox received reports of cloudiness in products from a distributor regarding cloudy products that had been distributed in multiple locations.

As Clorox failed to immediately report the product defects, the CPSC set a civil penalty of $14,150,000 upon the company which it agreed to pay as of Jan. 27, 2026.

The settlement agreement requires Clorox to maintain and abide by a compliance program designed to follow the Consumer Product Safety Act (CPSA) within their company. Additionally, they have agreed to submit an annual report of their compliance each year to the CPSC moving forward.
