- According to a research study “Track You: A Deep Dive into Safety Alerts for Apple AirTags” published in 2023, “Although Apple AirTags offer proactive safety alerts, the prolonged delay of over 8 hours in triggering them is a significant concern, as it undermines the victim’s ability to respond promptly to potential threats.”
- There are several noted cases of alleged stalking where airtags may have been used. In an article posted by NPR, it was shared how two individual women were the purported victims of stalking. Each woman had found airtags within their possessions, both situations resulting in lawsuits against their presumed perpetrators.
- Over the past few years, there have been several websites featuring articles that teach individuals how to remove the speaker from Apple AirTags. The speaker removal may be done in an attempt to keep the AirTag hidden from other parties, and could contribute to possible harm.
- The research article “Everyday tracking and extraordinary harm: item finder misuse in digital coercive control” brings to light the concern of how individuals who have suffered abuse may experience further harm due to the possible use of Apple AirTags to follow their movements. “Where one in three women worldwide experience some form of intimate partner violence, the rise of technology facilitated abuse means that abusers have increased access and control over their victims….The study shows a concerning lack of preventative measures imposed by device vendors to prevent device misuse; highlighting how easily perpetrators can repurpose item finder devices as a mechanism for stalking.”
- The Independent found that in England and Wales, there has been a vastly growing number of stalking cases that involved Apple AirTags. To quote, “..There had been a shocking 896 per cent increase in the number of stalking reports involving AirTags and GPS trackers, with the cases rising from 57 in 2018 to 568 by the end of 2024. In coercive control cases, this number had risen from 38 to 431 during the same time period – a 1,034 per cent increase.”
- Apple AirTags have purportedly led to serious crimes. As an ABC News article states, “In June 2022, an Indianapolis man was allegedly killed by an ex-girlfriend who police say used an AirTag to track him down. The family of Andre Smith, 26, has called for reform, citing the incident.” Gaylyn Morris, the ex-girlfriend of the victim, was later sentenced for the crime.
What is an Apple AirTag?
An Apple AirTag is a small, quarter sized tracking device that can be used and connected to Apple products. The designated purpose of the tracker was to help assist apple users in finding their personal possessions if they were to be separated from their persons, such as their keys, their wallet, or their phone. The AirTag does not have a built-in GPS, rather , it uses nearby Apple devices to anonymously pass its location to the Cloud. However, individual consumers have allegedly begun purchasing AirTags to track the locations of others unknowingly, sometimes going to the lengths of modifying the product in order to remain unnoticed.
