Ground Bison Recall Lawsuit

Ground bison imported to the United States from Canada has caused illness in at least 21 people so far due to E. coli contamination.

(July 16, 2019) Ground bison supplied by Northfork Bison Distributions Inc. of Saint-Leonard, Quebec, Canada was recalled in the United States due to a multistate outbreak of E. coli.

The recall involved ground bison (often referred to as Bison Ground), as well as bison/buffalo burgers that were produced between February 22, 2019 and April 30, 2019. Oftentimes called Bison Ground, the Northfork Bison Distributors products came in patties in 4×4-ounce packages. The expiration date reads through October 8, 2020.

There have been 21 illnesses and 8 hospitalizations, according to current information from the Food and Drug Administration. The last illness was reported on June 18, 2019. The states identified in the outbreak include Connecticut, Florida, Michigan, Montana, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

E. coli is usually a harmless bacteria, and actually contributes to intestinal health. However, when consumed, it can case mild to severe gastrointestinal illness for those affected. Some forms of E. coli, such as Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) can be life-threatening.
