What is the Problem?
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the fuel gas valve can open unexpectedly, allowing a gas leak and posing a fire hazard. The CPSC has received at least one report of gas leaking from the recalled gas furnaces and air conditioners. The CPSC warns consumers to stop using Trane/American Standard Packaged Units immediately.

Other Dangers Involving Gas Leaks
A gas leak from a packaged unit air conditioner or furnace is hazardous and can lead to fire, explosion, carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, or severe health issues. Natural gas and propane are highly flammable, and even a small spark can ignite them. Leaks may also release CO, a colorless, odorless gas that can cause headaches, dizziness, unconsciousness, or death. Exposure to gas can also irritate the eyes, throat, and lungs. Common causes include faulty gas valves, loose connections, or cracked heat exchangers.
