What is the Problem?
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the lithium-ion battery in the recalled portable chargers can overheat, posing a fire hazard. Baseus and the CPSC have received at least 76 reports of portable charger incidents, including at least four reports of the devices catching fire. The CPSC warns consumers to stop charging their devices with the recalled chargers.
Why are Lithium-ion Batteries Potentially Dangerous?
Lithium-ion batteries can be dangerous if they’re defective, damaged, or get too hot because they can catch fire or even explode. This happens because the material inside them is flammable, and if something goes wrong, like a short circuit, it can cause a chain reaction (also known as thermal runaway) that makes the battery heat up uncontrollably.
