What is the Problem?
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the scooter’s folding mechanism can fail, causing the handlebars or stem to fold while the scooter is in use, posing a fall hazard to consumers. Segway has received at least 68 reports of folding mechanism failures, including at least 20 injuries to include abrasions, bruises, lacerations, and broken bones. The CPSC is warning consumers to stop using the scooters immediately.
Is My Scooter Included in the Recall?
The March 20, 2025, recall included about 220,000 Segway Ninebot Max G30P and Max G30LP KickScooters. The Max G30LP KickScooter is gray with yellow accents. The Max G30P is black with yellow accents. The name “ninebot” appears on the foot platform and the top of the handlebars. The model number is located on a label on the side of the foot deck.
The scooters were sold nationwide at Best Buy, Costco, Walmart, Target, and Sam’s Club, as well as online at Segway.com and Amazon.com, from January 2020 through February 2025, for a price range of between $600 and $1,000.
Injuries Associated with Scooter Accidents
Researchers at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) determined that from 2017 to 2022, e-scooter injuries rose by 45 percent each year. It was estimated that in 2022, at least 56,847 injuries were caused by e-scooter accidents, resulting in at least 6,317 hospitalizations.
